(WWJ) – Former Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Appearing before a federal judge in Washington D.C. this morning, Kelley, of west Michigan, entered a guilty plea to the charge of entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds.
Documents say Kelley climbed scaffolding and ended up in a courtyard at the Capitol. He also allegedly gestured to the large crowd to come to the building.
Kelley is set to be sentenced in October in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He faces up to six months in prison and a fine of $1,000 to $9,500 under the estimated sentencing guidelines, according to a report from The Detroit News.
Kelley reportedly agreed to pay $500 in restitution toward the $2.8 million in damage done to the Capitol during the riot when thousands gathered to protest the results of the 2020 Presidential Election, according to the report.
At least 20 people from Michigan have been charged in connection with the riot. Kelley is the most well-known Michigander to be charged.
Kelley was arrested last June, boosting his name recognition ahead of the Republican Primary Election. He ultimately finished fourth in the primary.
