(WWJ) A young Michigan woman who threw lye drain cleaner mixed with water on her sleeping father, ultimately causing his death, has been set free.
Megan Joyce Imirowicz, who was 18 at the time of the crime nearly two years ago, was given a light sentence on Tuesday and was released after spending more than a year in the Oakland County Jail, according to the Associated Press.
Back in June, a 12-person jury convicted Imirowicz on a felony charge of Unlawful Possession or Use of Harmful Devices/Irritants Causing Death — which carries a penalty of up to life in prison.
She was also convicted on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.
According to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, Imirowicz, of Groveland Township, doused Konrad Imirowicz with chemicals as he was sleeping in October of 2021 .
The 64-year-old man was hospitalized with chemical burns across most of his body, and died from his injuries five month later.
The Oakland Press reports Oakland County Judge Victoria Valentine on Tuesday sentenced Imirowicz to a year in jail, in addition to five years of probation and other conditions.
She was released because the time she'd already served in jail — 506 days — exceeded the length of her sentence.
During the trial, prosecutors said that Imirowicz threw the powder on her dad because she was upset that he was too drunk to driver her to a hair appointment ahead of her 18th birthday party.
Speaking in the courtroom, Imirowicz said that the prosecution tried to make her "look like a monster," but that's not who she is. The young woman said her father was in fact her hero and her best friend, and that she misses him.
Reports said Imirowicz cried in the courtroom when she learned her sentence, expressing both shock and delight at the judge's leniency.
"I'm really happy I get to go home with my family," she told Law & Crime Network, adding: "I'm excited."
David Williams, Chief Assistant Prosecutor for Oakland County, told The Oakland Press that was not the outcome they were hoping for, but that ultimately the sentence is up to the judge.
