(WWJ) -- Some Michiganders will be receiving extra money for groceries this month -- just in time for Thanksgiving.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Monday that those who are on food assistance will see an additional payment loaded onto their EBT or Bridge Cards.

This extra cash is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to make groceries more affordable during the holidays.

Through next Tuesday, Nov. 23 those who are eligible will be receiving the extra payment. The amount will be based on household size, with a family of four on food assistance receiving $835.

More than 1.26 million people, or about 700,000 households in Michigan are expected to receive the food benefits.

“My top priority every day is making life easier for Michigan families, and that is especially true as we enter the holiday season,” said Whitmer. “By delivering additional relief to Michigan families on their grocery bills, we can ease financial burdens for Michiganders, drive down costs and put more money in people’s pockets as we all look forward to gathering with our loved ones over the holidays.”

Eligible families do not need to re-apply or add any extra information to receive the additional benefits.

People who receive food assistance can check their benefits balance on their Michigan Bridge Card by going HERE or calling a consumer service representative toll-free at (888) 678-8914.
