** UPDATE 3/5 ** 19-year-old killed after being hit by debris during Clinton Township explosions; public is warned not to touch potentially dangerous debris
======================================================

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) -- A long-lasting series of explosions has rocked Macomb County, in the area of 15 Mile Road and Groesbeck Monday night.

Officials speaking with WWJ Newsradio 950 say the incident is happening at Select Distributions, LLC.

The company's website says it is "a wholesale supplier of Novelties Item, Phone Accessories, and general merchandise to discount stores, dollar stores, wholesalers, jobbers, supermarkets, convenience stores and many other types of retailers and wholesalers."

The situation, which began around 9 p.m., is rapidly developing. Residents in the area reported hearing continuing explosions for around 45 minutes or more.

The Clinton Township Police Department is urging the public to stay away from the scene.

"We can not stress enough the danger that is happening right now," the department said in a Facebook post. "Please, please, please stay inside and out of the vicinity. Debris is being projected into the air and coming down as far as a mile away from the explosion. As we do not know what is burning, we do not know the effects of the smoke/air right now, so please stay out of the area and stay safe."

One witness, Jim Anglin, told WWJ's Ryan Wrecker live on air there were "thousands of explosions."

Anglin told WWJ he could see shrapnel "flying all different directions," believed to be going more than 40 feet in the air.

"Some things were on fire, some things were smoking, but they were flying everywhere," Anglin said.

The incident left Groesbeck closed between 14 Mile and Metro Parkway, with 15 Mile also blocked in the area. Drivers can use Gratiot as an alternate route.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time. Macomb County Emergency Management Director Brandon Lewis told WWJ crews are at the scene working to quell the flames, as well as determine whether there are any air quality threats posed by the fire.

Lewis said as of 11 p.m. there was "no reason to believe" there were any harmful contaminants, but authorities were doing their due diligence to determine the threat.

"At this point it's a precaution. We don't have any information that would lead us to believe that there's any reason for concern. However, we're doing due diligence, so we want to make sure we know exactly what's out there and that we get that information out as soon as possible when we can," Lewis said.

Lewis noted he has heard reports of ash being carried "several miles" away from the scene. He urged any residents in the area to keep their doors and windows closed until more information is known about any potential health risks posed by the smoke.

The fire was said to be under control, as of 11 p.m.
