DETROIT (WWJ) -- It's going to be dangerously hot over the next couple of days in Metro Detroit, and in areas across the country, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for all of Southeast Michigan, in effect Tuesday afternoon (7/14) through Tuesday evening, with heat index values up to 107° F possible.

WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said this is part of the "heat dome" stretching across the U.S.

"This is a monster area of high pressure over the eastern Rockies and northern Plains, and it's going to be nosing eastward into our area and bringing the heat with it," Lundberg said.

"It's going to be two of the hottest days of the week: tomorrow and Wednesday, with sunshine," he said. "It will be quite hot and humid, up to 97 tomorrow, maybe 96 on Wednesday. Real-feel temperatures both days will be over 100."

Thursday is lookin quite hot as well, Lundberg said, with a high around 94 in the Metro Detroit area.

If you're looking to escape the heat Up North, check the forecast before you pack your bags. Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsular are also under heat advisories.

The NWS warns that heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

The following precautions are advised:

  • Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
