Fall color chairlift rides at Porcupine Mountains suspended for upgrades this fall

ONTONAGON, Mich. (WWJ) -- A popular fall color ride in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has been put on hold for a few weeks.

The Michigan DNR says the popular fall color chairlift rides at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park will be closed until at least mid-October as crews continue to work on upgrades to the lift.

Officials say the triple-chair lift needed upgrades because it has become so popular among Michiganders and visitors alike, offering “a spectacular view of the surrounding autumn countryside and the deep blue waters of Lake Superior.”

When the work is done, the system will be tested and certified before opening to the public. When it reopens, the upgrades will allow more visitors to ride up and down the lift simultaneously, decreasing wait times.

While that will be an added bonus for visitors, by the time it’s completed in mid-October, peak color season will have already come and gone. An interactive map from SmokeyMountains.com shows the colors are expected to peak the final week of September in the U.P.

The DNR says there are other great places to see the colors in the area, including the Lake of the Clouds overlook, the Summit Peak tower and a series of waterfalls along the Presque Isle River, located at the west end of the park.
