(WWJ) An investigation is underway into a crash that killed a Pontiac family of four — a mother, father and their two children — along I-75 in Oakland County Wednesday night.

The victims have been identified as Tieree and Zakiera Powell, both 24 years old, and 4-year-old Malani and 2-year-old Carter.

The crash happened at around 9:10 p.m., as the family's vehicle was pulled over on the side of the southbound freeway, near Grange Hall Road.

According to the Michigan State Police, all four people in the car died when their car was hit by another vehicle.

MSP Lt. Ty Howard said the person who was driving the car that crashed into the family's vehicle was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

It's unclear at this time what led to the crash.

"So, we're still trying to figure that out. One thing we can confirm is the vehicle that suffered the fatalities, they were on the right shoulder," Howard said "We're not sure if they ran out of gas or they're having any type of vehicle issues, but the vehicle that was involved that actually struck them went on the right shoulder and hit that vehicle."

WWJ's Charlie Langton said that it's not yet known where the Pontiac family was coming from, or where they were headed.

Police noted that the crash happened in a construction zone that has been active for three years, adding that posted speed limits are repeatedly ignored.

"Still a lot of questions to be answered," Langton reported, from near the scene. "Accident reconstruction still doing the investigation, but I can tell you that the cars involved, these two vehicles involved, were damaged very, very severely."

No further information was released about the driver in custody, with expected charges still pending.
