FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - A large house fire caused alarm among residents in Farmington Hills after it detonated a stash of firearm ammunition that sounded like gun shots on Friday evening.

Farmington Hills Fire Marshal James Baloga said 911 calls came flooding in around 8:30 p.m., stating a home off Silken Glen Drive, just north of 8 Mile Road, had gone up in flames.

Authorities immediately responded to the scene. WWJ's Cassandra Llamas reported seeing multiple police vehicles, a fire truck and an ambulance speeding south on Halstead Road between 11 Mile and Grand River Ave. around the time of the fire.

When fire crews arrived, Baloga said they were forced to take defensive measures when they heard what sounded like gunfire going off inside the burning home.

"We had to take strategy due to a large amount of firearm ammunition which was reported as going off as gunshots," Baloga said via FOX 2.

Crews were able to douse the home once the ammunition was spent and moved inside to address any hot spots.

At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown, but fire officials believe it started on the second floor.

While several people were inside the home when the fire broke out, everyone made it out and no injuries were reported.
