FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) — A Farmington Hills man is facing assault and weapons charges after allegedly firing shots at his wife inside their home over the weekend.
Paul Holland, 44, was arraigned Monday on one count of felonious assault, one count of discharging a firearm inside a building and two counts of felony firearm.
The charges stem from an incident that led to a more-than two-hour standoff with police Saturday night at their home near 14 Mile and Middlebelt Roads.
It all unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the home on Ramblewood Drive when Holland’s wife called 911 to report that her husband had shot at him multiple times.
She told responding officers that her husband was intoxicated and “became aggressive towards her,” so she armed herself with a firearm.
Holland then allegedly armed himself with two handguns. His wife told police he “began shooting into the ceiling, walls and towards her.” The woman ran out of the home and met with the officers who responded to the scene, according to the Farmington Hills Police Department.
Officers tried to deescalate the situation and get Holland to leave the home peacefully, but he ignored all commands, officials said.
After getting a search warrant, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT Team forced their way into the home, where Holland was arrested. No one was injured during the incident.
Holland pleaded not guilty at Monday’s arraignment and his bond was set at $250,000 — 10% cash/surety. His next court date has been scheduled for Dec. 11.
“I am extremely proud of the heroic actions of the women and men of the Farmington Hills Police Department,” Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King said, per a press release. “They were calm and courageous in the face of danger and were able to expertly de-escalate a violent situation that could have resulted in great harm to those involved, as well as the neighboring community.” Chief King also expressed gratitude to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
Police officials said this is the fifth incident of domestic violence involving shots fired this year in Farmington Hills.
“The Farmington Hills Police Department is dedicated to preventing these senseless acts of violence through work with community partners, as part of the Farmington Hills Coordinated Community Response Team,” the department said in a press release.
“This group includes representatives from the Farmington Hills Police Department, City of Farmington Department of Public Safety, HAVEN, Call to Action Coalition, Mai Family Services, Oakland University, Jewish Family Services, Farmington Public Schools, Corewell Hospital, State and City prosecutors, and the 47th District Court. Team members meet regularly to pursue their goal of preventing the tragedy of domestic violence by reaching out to people in crisis and making them aware of vital services that are available.”
Anyone who is in need of these services is encouraged to call any of the listed community partners or the Farmington Hills Police Department.
