CASEVILLE TWP., MICH. (WWJ) A Farmington Hills man and teen were rescued after their catamaran flipped over during a thunderstorm off the coast of Michigan’s thumb.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Office said Central Dispatch received multiple calls from bystanders on shore about a catamaran being flipped over in the water in Caseville Township. The witnesses said it happened in front of an approaching severe thunderstorm, about 250 yards south of the western end of Sand Point.

First responders spotted two people, wearing life jackets, trying to flip the catamaran back up right. The storm and the strong winds carried the capsized catamaran and the victims a mile offshore.

Within about 45 minutes, rescuers safely brought the two people aboard the Huron County Sheriff Office’s airboat near North Island in Wild Fowl Bay.

They were rescued with the help of the Caseville Fire Department and their trailered Zodiac rescue boat.

The rescued were a 38-year-old Farmington Hills man and 15-year-old girl. It’s unclear of how or if they are related to one another.
