DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are reminding drivers to be careful around snow plows after a deadly crash.

The crash happened on eastbound I-96 near Southfield in Detroit, just before midnight Monday.

According to officials with the MSP Second District, troopers were called to the scene after two crashes.

Investigators said the driver of a Wayne County plow truck was salting in the left lane when a Toyota sideswiped the truck. The Toyota bounced off the salt truck and stopped in the center lane, and was hit again by another car.

The Toyota driver, identified as a 32-year-old man from Farmington, was pronounced dead on scene. His name was not released.

“The MSP traffic crash reconstruction unit is continuing to investigate this crash,” said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw. “This is an unfortunate reminder to drive carefully near snow plows. Please make sure to slow down and give plows plenty of room.”

The freeway was closed for the investigation, but has since reopened.
