FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police say they are investigating a fatal car crash involving alcohol in Monroe County.
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said the crash occurred on Newport Road east of War Road, in Frenchtown Township. The crash was reported at 10:19 p.m. on Nov. 23.
Authorities say an early investigation found that Noel Smith, 54, of Newport, was driving a 2014 Ford Focus westbound on Newport Road. Nicole Herron, 39, also of Newport, was driving a 2000 Ford F-250 eastbound on Newport Road.
Police say Smith's vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane and struck Herron's vehicle. After the impact, Smith was ejected from the vehicle. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.
Smith was pronounced dead on the scene. Herron was taken to Corewell Health Hospital in Trenton where she was listed in stable condition, authorities said.
Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.
