DETROIT (WWJ) - A New Center area bar along Woodward Avenue is a total loss following a massive fire Tuesday morning.

Chief James Harris of the Detroit Fire Department told WWJ that flames were shooting out of the building when crews arrived at the Woodward Cocktail Bar, in the 6000 block of Woodward, at around 11 a.m.

"The building collapsed a little in the back, so we went into defensive mode, which means we weren't able to go in," Harris told WWJ's Ryan Marshall.

Marshall said heavy, dark smoke in the air was making it difficult to breathe as he reported live from the scene, which is just south of W. Grand Blvd.

He said the main concern was spreading, as firefighters were working to keep two nearby buildings from catching on fire.

Harried said there was no one inside the bar, and there were no injuries reported.

The QLINE was shut down with no word on when it would reopen. Officials said other DDOT operations would be detoured away from the area.

The flames were out by around 1 p.m., although there was still some smoke in the air. The DFD said crews were beginning cleanup, and would remain on the scene through the afternoon.

Harris said it's too early to determine the cause of the fire, but there will be an investigation.
