A Monroe County boat storage facility is a total loss following a massive fire.
It took some time, but fire crews have mostly extinguished the blaze burning at the Toledo Beach marina in LaSalle Township, south of Monroe, Friday morning.
Heavy smoke could be seem for miles after a boat storage facility was fully engulfed when crews arrived.
"It's sad, it's really sad," one boater told WWJ's Charlie Langton. The fiberglass and fuel were what was causing the thick, black smoke, he said.
Making for a dramatic scene, the roof and walls collapsed.
"A lot of expensive boats are completely gone now," a boat detailer on the scene said, adding one of the boats was worth $2 million.
Langton spoke with Carrie Nation, whose husband Chad was among volunteer firefighters sent in to assist.
"I think the building that burnt down, essentially, has upwards of a hundred or more boat in it," Nation said. "He's working one of the lines. Every fire department from county is here, so... yeah, it's pretty devastating."
No injuries were reported.
In a statement, a spokesman for Safe Harbor Marina said they are relieved that all of our employees are safe, adding: "Our leadership team is at the property managing the situation. We are working closely with first responders and have initiated an investigation into the cause."
