NORTHVILLE (WWJ) – Many Metro Detroiters may have seen a large fire burning at Maybury State Park on Thursday afternoon.

No cause for concern, though – it was by design.

The Northville Township Fire Department conducted live fire training exercises for multiple area fire departments on Thursday.

The event included six different fires – three on each floor of the state park’s former two-story, 2,200-square-foot headquarters building.

Fire officials said the building had become surplus to park operations and was slated to be demolished this month. Maybury State Park Unit Supervisor Traci Sincock invited Northville Township Fire Department to host the rare fire exercise before the demolition.

The building was used to show responders how fire acts within a closed space. Each lesson, spaced throughout the day, had different challenges.

A Northville Township firefighter acted as an instructor at each module and at the end of all six lessons, the two-story structure was completely burned.

More than 50 firefighters and other first responders were at the event.

The WWJ newsroom received multiple tips about the fire throughout the day.
