DETROIT (WWJ) - A fire that broke out at a vacant home on Detroit's west side injured one firefighter as crews battled the blaze Thursday evening, officials said.

Chief James Harris with the Detroit Fire Department said the blaze stared at the home in the 15400 block of Iliad around 7:20 p.m.

Roughly 40 firefighters were called to the scene and battled the flames for an hour, Harris said.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, which was contained to the property and did not spread to other dwellings.

During the response, one firefighter was injured as he fell through the floor of the burning home, Harris told WWJ.

Mayday was not called as the crew member was not trapped, Harris added, but the man suffered bumps, cuts and bruises on his lower exterminates.

The firefighter was taken to DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening injuries.

Harris said no one else was injured.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.
