Detroit police officers, EMTs rushed to hospital following fentanyl exposure

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two Detroit police officers and two EMTs were rushed to the hospital today after being exposed to fentanyl.

WWJ’s Sandra McNeil reports that first responders were called to a bar at 8 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue on Detroit’s east side just before 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, where a 35-year-old man was in cardiac arrest.

While performing CPR, one of the medics was exposed to fentanyl, and had an adverse reaction, according to Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell.

The two medics, along with two DPD officers who were also exposed to the drug, were then rushed to the hospital for observation.

The officers are reportedly stable and are not experiencing an symptoms from the exposure, while the medics are also expected to recover.

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old man who is believed to have overdosed on fentanyl -- which is more than eighty-times more potent than heroin -- was later pronounced dead at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

As a hazmat team decontaminates the scene, Detroit police are continuing to investigate the situation.
