FLINT TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- A Flint Township man is heading to prison after being found guilty of a laundry list of felonies stemming from an incident where a Genesee County Sheriff's deputy was assaulted last year.

Willie Ray Cummings, Jr., 29, was riding a mini-bike in the area of Fenton and Hemphill Roads when patrolling deputies attempted to stop him on the sidewalk on July 24, 2024.

The deputies activated the patrol car's lights and sirens. Cummings didn't stop until they drove onto the sidewalk and blocked his path. While patting him down, one of the deputies felt a gun in his pocket.

That's when Cummings jumped on the deputy and started assaulting them. The other deputy hit him with a taser and took him into custody.

The firearm Cummings was carrying was a ghost gun loaded with sixteen 9mm rounds.

"(ghost guns are)...assembled by the one who orders it online. Even if they aren't legally able to own a firearm. Convicted felon. Underage. Doesn't matter" says Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. "That's why ghost guns are so dangerous. Untraceable. Anybody can do it. You just assemble it at home"

Cummings has been found guilty of eight total felonies; one count of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of felon in possession of ammunition, three counts of felony firearm second offense and two counts of resisting and obstructing police.

He'll be sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison on May 19th.
