
DETROIT (WWJ) -- Thunderstorms are back in the forecast for Metro Detroit — starting with heavy rain which began falling early Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 8 a.m. Thursday for Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Monroe, Washtenaw and St. Clair counties are under the watch.
The Great Lakes Water Authority said it expects one to two inches of rain across the Southeast Michigan region. and its urging people who live in low- lying areas to get valuable items out of the basement.
Forecasters say the biggest threat of severe weather will be between 5 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday — with the risk of a tornado or two in the overnight hours.
"This afternoon, if we're gonna see some severe weather that's when it would start to rear its ugly head unfortunately, as milder air tries to squeeze into the area. We'll get to about 62 (degrees)," AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said.
"There could be some flooding, downpours, hail and localized damaging wind gusts during the court of the afternoon and evening, and into tonight as well," he said. "In fact, if there's a risk of tornadoes, that's probably going to be after dark tonight, unfortunately."
Looking ahead, the wet weather is expected to continue through the workweek and into the weekend.
