DEARBORN (WWJ) -- Ford Motor Company is cutting 3,000 salaried jobs, with a focus in the U.S., Canada and India.

WWJ’s Jeff Gilbert reports that the move comes as the car company attempts to reduce costs and make the transition into electric vehicles.

A companywide email from Executive Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley sent on Monday announced that 2,000 full-time salaried workers would be let go, as well as an additional 1,000 contract workers.

"Building on this future requires changing and reshaping virtually all aspects of the way we have operated for more than a century," the email said. "It means redeploying resources and addressing our cost structure, which is uncompetitive versus traditional and new companies."

The email went on to say that Ford will provide benefits and assistance for the laid off workers to find new jobs.

Farley said during a recent earnings call that the company had an excess of employees in certain departments, and needed to cut costs to in order to continue to be competitive.

A report from Bloomberg in June estimated that Ford could cut as many as 8,000 jobs over the course of 2022.

The 3,000 affected employees are expected to be notified sometime this week.
