Ford reportedly offering buyouts to 1,000 salaried U.S. employees

(WWJ) -- Ford Motor Co. is reportedly offering buyouts to some salaried employees, looking for about 1,000 white-collar workers to call it a career as the company looks to “better align staffing with needed skills.”

The automaker is offering a voluntary separation program to eligible U.S. salaried employees in select skill teams, according to a report Thursday from the Detroit News.

While it is not clear when the program begins or ends, the company says the move is “to further enable us to match our business priorities with the critical skills needed to turnaround our automotive options and deliver the Ford+ plan,” according to the report.

That plan was unveiled back in the spring, as Ford looks to turn more to electric vehicles, digital connectivity and commercial vehicles as part of a move to a new business model “that emphasizes interactions with customers over infrequent transactions.”

Ford officials have said they plan to spend more money on electric vehicles than combustion engine vehicles in 2023, and plans to increase its investments in electrification to $30 billion through 2025.

Thursday’s announcement comes as Ford has added about 600 software designers and data scientists over the last year, according to the News.
