DETROIT (WWJ) Former Michigan State University basketball star Keith Appling is facing charges in another shooting while he's in custody for a murder charge in Detroit.
Appling was charged Tuesday with intent to do bodily harm and felony firearm in connection with a shooting that happened at his girlfriend's Jackson home in early May.
The Detroit News reports the 29-year-old is accused of shooting at a man who had showed up at the house regarding a child Appling fathered with his girlfriend who lived there. The man was not struck, but his car had multiple bullet holes in it, according to the News.
The embattled former basketball star has already been charged with first degree murder of a distant relative late this spring. The victim's wife was the first cousin of Appling's mother.
Authorities say on the evening of May 22, officers were called to a home on Detroit's west side for a reported shooting.
When officers arrived, they found the victim, Clyde Edmonds, 66, in the front yard with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities say Appling and Edmonds had gotten into an argument over a handgun and Appling shot Edmonds multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Appling's girlfriend, Natalie Bannister, was also charged in connection to the events of the murder with accessory after the fact and lying to a peace officer.
Appling has been denied bond.
The Detroit Pershing graduate played for four years at MSU from 2010 to 2014, the team's leading scorer heading into his junior season. After graduation, he signed two short-lived contracts with the Orlando Magic.
He spent 18 months on probation for drug charges in 2020, and about two years earlier, was sentenced to a year in jail for carrying concealed weapons and resisting arrest.
