DETROIT (WWJ) – The James Scott Memorial Fountain on Belle Isle has been temporarily closed for repairs caused by flooding earlier this month.
The fountain, near the west end of Belle Isle Park, is expected to be closed until the end of August.
Officials with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources say a failed four-inch water pipe shut-off valve caused flooding in an underground tunnel that damaged several newer electrical components related to the fountain's circulation and filtration system.
Electricians have been working on repairs in the underground mechanical tunnel after DNR staff were able to pump and dry it out.
"Unfortunately, the repairs will be delayed because some of the parts are not available for several weeks," DNR officials said.
"The James Scott Memorial Fountain is one of the more iconic attractions in the park," said Thomas Bissett, urban district supervisor for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. "We're working as quickly as we can to get the fountain back in operation so visitors can enjoy this historic landmark."
The nearly 1,000-acre island park on the Detroit River is a popular destination for Detroiters and tourists, offering outdoor activities and a number of attractions, including the fountain.
