(WWJ) – Metro Detroit got a taste of summer-like weather earlier this month, but quickly turned back to the reality of springtime in Michigan.

And we're in for more of the same overnight, as the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for most of Southeast Michigan.

Most of the area is forecast to see sub-freezing temperatures, dropping to around 30 degrees, according to the NWS.

The Freeze Warning is in effect for Oakland, Washtenaw, Genesee, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Lapeer, Livingston and Lenawee Counties from 2-8 a.m. Monday.

Most counties on the west side of the state are also under a Freeze Warning from midnight to 8 a.m.

Freezing conditions can kill crops and other sensitive vegetation without added protection.

"Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold," the NWS said in an advisory Sunday afternoon.

Steps to protect sensitive vegetation from freezing temperatures include moving tender plants inside, if possible; putting sheets or towels over them with the support of a stake; and watering them well, according to Better Homes & Gardens.

"To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly," the NWS said. "Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing."

As for the rest of the week, AccuWeather meteorologist Carl Erickson says we can expect a "mostly cloudy and chilly" Monday with a high temp of 49. Temperatures are expected to hover in the 50s over the next few days.
