(WWJ) – It’s no secret that being prepared for an emergency is important. But what that looks like can be drastically different for different people.

Some simply store canned food and water and have an emergency plan. Others build elaborate, underground bunkers in anticipation of the apocalypse.

On a new Daily J podcast WWJ’s Brian Fisher explores the world of “doomsday preppers” and learns there’s an expo every year in Michigan helping people get prepared for all types of emergencies.

The Great Lakes Emergency Preparedness Expo in Imlay City – put on by David Castlegrant and Associates – just held its 10th show last month, helping people learn how to be ready for everything from power outages and natural disasters to the apocalypse.

Kyle MacNall with David Castlegrant says “some are preparing for ‘the end of days,’ while others are preparing for any scenario.” But most at the expo are just looking for products to be a little more prepared.

Dr. Bradley Garrett, author of “Bunker: Preparing For The End Times,” says he’s seen people take their preparedness to the next level.

While there’s a home with a 5,000 square-foot underground bunker for sale in Battle Creek, Mich., Garrett says the most impressive he’s seen is the “Survival Condo” in Kansas, an old Cold War missile silo-turned doomsday bunker.

He says a man purchased the property from the U.S. government and “put about $10 million of his own money into building what I can only describe as an inverted skyscraper.”

“It’s 15 stories but it goes underground rather than above ground. The facility was absolutely incredible,” he said.

The facility includes a shooting range, cinema and bar. It also features wind power, solar power, battery backups, five years of diesel fuel, aquaponics facilities to grow food and fish. It even had a grocery store, Garrett said.
