(WWJ) A family friend is sharing the story of a grandfather shot three times at an Oakland County splash park, while asking for donations to help while he and his family recover.

According to Tara Forgue, who launched an online fundraiser, 77-Richard Schumborg was with his 8-year-old granddaughter Bexley at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad on June 17 when a gunman opened fire into the crowd.

The GoFundMe, which has been verified by the city of Rochester Hills and the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, has so fair raised a little more than $4,200 to assist Schumborg's loved ones, as they care for him during this difficult time.

Forgue said a visit to the splash pad was nothing out of the norm for Schumborg — a "wonderful and fun loving grandpa" who enjoyed spending his time with his grandchildren on a regular basis.

"The shooter shot him two times in the abdomen and then looked him in the eyes and shot him again in the thigh. He would have continued but he ran out of rounds dropped the gun and walked away. Bexley made a run for to the bathroom unharmed and hid with a friend until the choas ended and safely back in her Mom and Dads arms," Forgue wrote.

She said Schumborg received great medical care and was released from the hospital on Monday.

"My friend Amanda is the mother of five girls, a wonderfully supportive husband and this has surely set the need for support for this family on many levels so they can navigate," Forgue continued. "Amanda will need take some time off to help her father in-law and be with her girls while everyone recovers from this. Please consider Rallying in Support for the Schumborg family. Thank you so much."

There were a total of nine shooting victims.

Along with Schumborg, five more victims of the shooting are now out of the hospital. They include: a 4-year-old boy, a 31-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman, a 39-year-old woman, and a 42-year-old man.

As of the last update from the OCSO, provided on June 19, three victims remain hospitalized. They are: a 39-year-old woman, a 30-year-old woman, and an 8-year-old boy. The 39-year-old, who was shot in the abdomen and the leg, is the mother of both of the boys who were shot.

While no motive has been uncovered in this case, information from a family member suggests the shooter — 42-year-old Michael William Nash of Shelby Township — was struggling with his mental health and exhibited signs of paranoia.

He fatally shot himself at his Shelby Township home a short time after the shooting.

The 9mm handgun used in the shooting was purchased legally and was registered to Nash, according to the sheriff's office said. Investigators found 11 more weapons at the home, where Nash lived with his mother, including a high-powered rifle.
