GENESEE COUNTY (WWJ) -- Joining Oakland County, jail inmates in Genesee County will no longer receive traditional mail deliveries in an effort to block drug-soaked papers from getting into prisoner's hands.
Sheriff's officials said inmates are getting high from eating parts of the mail they receive that are soaked with meth that is able to be turned into a liquid.
Capt. Jason Gould of the county Sheriff's Department told commissioners that the contraband is "undetectable" because it's sprayed like a perfume, but you can't smell it.
"It dries on the paper and then it's sent to the inmates in the jail," Gould said.
Gould said that the inmates the rip off the corners of the mail, eat it and then get high.
On Wednesday, additional funding was approved by the Genesee County Board of Commissioners to allow a company to scan the mail and provide images of letters to the Sheriff's Department, which then will allow inmates to look at the images at kiosks.
According to Mlive, Oakland County and the Michigan Department of Corrections started a similar system two years ago.
