EAST LANSING (WWJ) -- Governor Gretchen Whitmer has apologized after breaking one of her own COVID-19 rules.
On Saturday, a photo posted on social media -- and later deleted -- showed Whitmer and about a dozen other unmasked guests gathered with tables pushed together at the Landshark Bar & Grill in East Lansing.
That violates the current orders for Michigan restaurants and bars, which requires six people or fewer at tables with distances of 6 feet, and no intermingling.
"Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been committed to following public health protocols," Whitmer said in a statement on Sunday. "Yesterday, I went with friends to a local restaurant. As more people arrived, the tables were pushed together. Because we were all vaccinated, we didn’t stop to think about it. In retrospect, I should have thought about it. I am human. I made a mistake, and I apologize."
The governor’s misstep comes closely after she drew criticism for a trip she took to Florida in March, after she cautioned Michiganders against going south.
Whitmer recently disclosed that she had traveled in a private jet for the four-day trip to West Palm Beach to visit her sick father.
A top aid to the governor released information last week that her trip, which cost a total of $27,521, was paid for by a travel fund, and not covered by tax dollars.
Whitmer announced last week that all COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted in Michigan on July 1.
