LANSING (WWJ) - If you're looking to enjoy a cool Mai Tai on a hot summer day at your local pool, you're in luck — new legislation signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer now allows businesses to serve alcohol to their poolside patrons.
Whitmer signed the House Bills 5983 and 5984 on Tuesday to legalize swim-up bars in Michigan for the first time. The bills will also allow 17-year-old waitstaff to sell and serve alcohol at restaurants and other businesses.
Advocates say the bills will positively impact Michigan’s tourism industry.
“This will enable hospitality business operators the opportunity to provide a new experience for their guests which will boost the Michigan tourism industry,” said Michael Zehnder, owner of the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth, as reported by ABC 12.
Swim-up bars are legal in 24 states, including neighboring Ohio.
Rep. John Cherry of Flint said that the new legislation will help Michigan's hospitality and resort industry stay competitive with other states.
“Offering unique experiences for families and visitors in a safe, well-regulated manner is an important goal as we look toward the future of Michigan’s hospitality industry,” he said via ABC 12. "I’m proud to work with my colleagues to offer these new opportunities for economic expansion, giving a boost to Mid-Michigan businesses.”
The bills will require hotels and resorts who want to open a poolside bar to pay a $350 fee in addition to serving alcohol in non-breakable beverage containers and enhancing water quality or filtration measures.
Businesses must also provide mandatory lifeguard services.
