Governor Whitmer comments on controversial Florida trip: 'It was not a gift'

The Michigan governor says no taxpayer money was spent when traveled to see her father in March

LANSING (WWJ) -- Governor Gretchen Whitmer has addressed her controversial trip to Florida, and says no taxpayer money was spent when traveled to see her father back in March.

While a spokesperson for the Michigan governor previously stated that her trip was only two days, Whitmer said during a recent briefing that her time in West Palm Beach spanned four days.

Still, she added that the trip was purely to tend to her ailing father, and says that she continued to be on regular calls and conferences with her team while she was there.

"From a Friday to a Monday -- two full days -- I was there. It was not a vacation and it was not a gift. This was a quick trip that I took and I think it's important for people to know," Whitmer said. "Like a lot of children of parents who have health issues or relatives who have health issues, I showed up when I was needed."

Whitmer's comments come after allegations were made by Deadline Detroit that she had traveled to Florida in a $40,000 private jet owned by wealthy Detroit businessmen.

It remains unclear if any of the members of Governor Whitmer's security staff from Michigan State Police accompanied her on her trip.
