GROSS ILE (WWJ) -- Parents with kids in Grosse Ile Township Schools could be in a bind this fall.
Just days ahead of the first day of school, the district has informed parents that there will be no bus service for most students.
The decision came after two bus drivers unexpectedly quit, and school officials say they haven’t had enough time to hire their replacements.
In a letter to parents, the district announced it won't be able to offer general education bus service, but will be able provide transportation for special education and career technical students.
Meanwhile, school officials say they are looking to bring on an outside transportation vendor to fill the gap.
“I know that this letter is very untimely and this situation will create frustration and panic as parents scramble to secure transportation for their children,” Superintendent Valerie Orr wrote. “I am incredibly sorry to put parents in this situation and wish we could have found an alternative solution.”
During the summer, the school district had felt the transportation issue was resolved when they hired two new drivers and rehired three who had previously left during COVID.
“Despite this progress, the district would not be able to guarantee transportation services to our families with these recent resignations,” Orr said.
Grosse Ile Township Schools start on Tuesday, September 7.
