WESTLAND (WWJ) -- After running into a church and allegedly shooting at local, county and state officers, a gunman was injured and arrested on Friday afternoon in Westland.
According to Westland Police, Detroit Police officers were in Westland, along Palmer Rd. west of Venoy, investigating a suspect in connection with a robbery that occurred in the City of Detroit.
Officers had tracked the suspect to a home, where they attempted to apprehend him as he exited his vehicle.
The suspect fled to nearby Palmer Road Baptist Church, made his way to the second floor, and fired shots at police from the upper story windows.
Shots fired by the gunman struck the passenger door of a Westland police unit and the windshield of a Wayne County Sheriff's Office vehicle.
A barricaded gunman situation was declared at around 2:30 p.m., with Michigan State Police and Wayne County deputies assisting.
One witness described the initial moments to WWJ's Ryan Marshall.
"You see the guy shooting at the cop, and the guy's running towards the church, ran into the church, and the cop's shooting at the guy," Westland resident Stephanie Yellen said. "And I'm like, 'Mom!... Back up! Back up! Like, we've gotta turn around, we've gotta turn around. It was scary! Like, my nerves are so shot... I don't want to ever be in that situation ever again."
According to an update from MSP, one Detroit Police officer returned fire.
The suspect was struck, though at this time, it is not known if he was hit by a bullet or by glass and debris from the round piercing the window.
After being hit, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody by Michigan State Police, who will now handle the rest of the investigation.
The suspect was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and then transported to Wayne County Jail.
According to MSP, "No other officers, deputies or troopers fired at the suspect... No officers or members of the public were hurt."
Adams Middle School, located on Palmer Rd. about half-a-block from the church, was placed under lockdown as a precaution.
However, police said "at no time was there any school involvement/danger" in this incident.
