DETROIT (WWJ) A 20-hour standoff an assisted living facility on the Detrot's east side has come to a peaceful end.
Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950, Detroit Police Chief James White said it was a long night for officers on the scene at the Parkview Tower and Square Apartments, which houses 200 people in the area of Robert Bradby and Chene, near the Detroit Riverfront.
White said a 911 call came in at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday from a woman who was in a domestic dispute with a man in the building.
White said the man, who is dealing with mental illness, picked up a gun and held the woman hostage.
"He and the significant other had some type of altercation, where he indicated that, you know, he did not want to live and that he was going to take her life, initially," White said.
"She was very calm with him, so he ended up firing shots, and thankfully not at her. And we were able with our negotiators and our CIT experts — which is our crisis intervention team, which have training in mental health — we were able to negotiate with him and get her out safely."
No one was hurt, the chief said, when the man fired shots off the balcony.
It was another 12 hours before police were able to get the gunman to surrender.
He was taken into custody without incident Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, a number of residents who were evacuated from the building and displaced overnight have been allowed to return to their homes.
Detroit Police thanked residents for their patience and support during the ordeal.
White thanked the "dedicated, hard working women and men of Detroit Police Department" who were on the clock throughout the night.
"Just great policework, great patience with our police officers that brought this situation to an end without any use of force," White said. "So just outstanding work."
Police have not released any details about the gunman, including his name or age. Expected charges are pending.
