(WWJ) -- Things don’t seem to be cooling down anytime soon for metro Detroit.

A heat advisory is in effect for several southeastern Michigan counties beginning Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., and stretching into 8:00 p.m. this evening.

The advisory includes Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties, with heat indexes up to 100 degrees expected.

Later on Wednesday, there's a chance of thunderstorms with the possibility of gusty winds and drenching downpours.

The hot and humid weather will also continue into Thursday, with more storms expected.

The heat advisory follows a line of storms that swept through the state last night, leaving 8,600 DTE customers without power in metro Detroit and more than 180,000 outages in mid and west Michigan.

Winds of 50 to 70 miles per hour knocked down tree limbs, and toppled entire trees. Most of the outages are concentrated in Grand Rapids and Kent County, along with Allegan and Muskegon counties, and Traverse City.

The utility is still assessing the impact, but a spokesperson says some power may not be restored until the weekend.
