Heavy downpours, hail, wind gusts up to 50 mph possible Sunday; More strong storms in Metro Detroit Monday

Storms developing in Metro Detroit
National Weather Service

(WWJ) — Thunderstorms are expected in parts of Metro Detroit Sunday evening before stronger storms are likely to hit the area on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect until 6:30 p.m. for parts of Macomb and Oakland Counties, including Troy, Sterling Heights and Warren. The NWS says quarter-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 60 mph are possible.

Until 10 p.m. Sunday the NWS says a lake breeze is capable of producing "scattered to numerous showers with embedded thunderstorms" across Southeast Michigan.

The Metro Detroit region is expected to see the "best coverage" as the system makes its way across the area.

While severe weather is not expected Sunday afternoon into the evening, the NWS says "overachieving thunderstorms will be capable of producing highly localized heavy downpours, hail and wind gusts up to 45-50 mph."

Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday the NWS said isolated thunderstorms are developing from Port Huron into Metro Detroit this afternoon. Specifically, the storms are developing along a line from Port Huron to Adrian.

Heavy downpours, lightning, small hail and gusts to 50 mph are all possible as storms propagate to the southwest. The NWS says storms may continue to develop through this evening before dissipating after sunset.

"If you have outdoor plans today, keep an eye on the radar and head indoors if you hear thunder," the NWS said on X.

As for Monday, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening. The NWS says "strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible."

The main hazards of those storms will be damaging wind gusts to 60 mph and hail up to an inch.

"An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out," the NWS said Sunday morning.

The NWS is encouraging residents to be prepared for potentially severe weather — always have a severe weather safety plan in place and have multiple ways to receive warning.
