HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) -- Highland Park has declared a state of emergency following heavy storms and massive flooding that took place over the weekend.

Mayor Hubert Yopp made the city-wide declaration on Saturday after numerous reports were received regarding flooded streets, and surges of water in the basements of residential and business buildings.

"I am aware of the severity of damage caused by these storms, and I am contacting officials from Wayne County, the state of Michigan as well as FEMA to make sure Highland Park residents have access to all available resources," Yopp said in a statement. "As mayor, it is my responsibility to ensure the safety of the citizens of Highland Park and I will do all I can to help residents recover."

Yopp added that he expects to have more information for Highland Park residents following meetings with city, state and federal officials scheduled on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Highland Park Police Department was also affected by the torrential downpour this weekend.

Due to extensive flooding in the building, the police department has been temporarily moved to 13333 Hamilton Ave, Highland Park, MI 48203.

The HPPD contact number remains the same, at 313-852-7338.

Nearby, the city of Inkster is also experiencing serious issues with flooding and is awaiting word about the potential for the declaration of a state of emergency.

"We have called in members of our Department of Public Services staff and other support to assist with flood remediation efforts," the city wrote in a statement on Facebook. "We are in communication with the Governor's office and are seeking guidance and assistance from other appropriate governmental agencies."

Officials are encouraging residents to document all flood damage with photos and videos, and to take safety precautions around standing water, especially where there is contact with an electrical current.

The Inkster Police Department's non-emergency number 313-563-9850 is receiving calls, and residents can call the city's general number at 313-563-4232 for more information. All emergencies should be reported using 911.
