It's been hot in Metro Detroit. How is the RealFeel temperature determined?

(WWJ) – It’s been hot in Metro Detroit. Like, really hot. Last week temperatures climbed into the mid-to-high 90s, with AccuWeather RealFeel temps in the triple digits.

This week saw temperatures again climb into the 90s, but RealFeel temps weren’t quite as high.

What exactly does that mean?

On WWJ’s weekly Weather Wednesday segment, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson explained how it’s different than the heat index.

The heat index quantifies how hot it feels outside by combining heat and humidity. AccuWeather RealFeel temps, meanwhile, also incorporates other variables like cloud cover, wind and whether there’s precipitation.

Thompson says the wind played into this week’s RealFeel temps.

“It happened last Wednesday and it happened again yesterday – it’s been pretty breezy. We’ve had winds gusting 20-30 mph, so even as the humidity started climbing yesterday afternoon, we were getting that gusty breeze,” Thompson said Wednesday. “And that really helped keep, at least yesterday, RealFeel temperatures below 100.”

Thompson says after a day of more mild temperatures on Thursday, things will heat back up for the weekend.

“By Saturday, it’ll be close to 90, but I don’t think the humidity will be that bad,” he said.

The humidity will come back up on Sunday, Thompson says, but there will also be a cold front and that could mean some cooler weather next week.
