(WWJ) The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced $2.3 million in funding will go to the Detroit Housing Commission, a share of $28 million to be split among a dozen public housing agencies around the country.

These grants are through the HUD's Jobs Plus program, aimed at supporting work readiness and "connecting public house residents with employment, education and financial empowerment services"—part of a proven evidence-based model, according to HUD. The end goal is to help public housing residents find and keep jobs.

"This funding will empower individuals and their families to be on a trajectory towards self-sufficiency and success," James A. Cunningham, HUD Midwest Deputy Regional Administrator, said in a release.

The Jobs Plus Programs requires public housing agencies to partner with local Department of Labor Workforce Development Boards and American Jobs Centers.

"Additionally, Jobs Plus grantees are required to demonstrate a 25 percent match from community partners, providing wrap-around supportive services to improve employment and earnings outcome," the release read.

The remaining $26 million will be sent to public housing agencies in Houston, San Antonio, Philadelphia, Roanoke, and Palm Beach, among others.
