I-75 closed at I-696 as crews investigate sinkhole under the freeway

(WWJ) Is there a big sinkhole under I-75 in Oakland County?

An unexpected surprise freeway closure is causing delay for drivers as crews work to figure that out.

The northbound lanes of I-75 are shut down at I-696, with backups reported to 8 Mile Road beginning early in the afternoon on Friday.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says the closure is necessary to investigate a "void" — better known as a sinkhole — discovered under the northbound I-75 Service Drive.

MDOT's Rob Morosi told WWJ that crews are trying to determine whether the void also goes under the freeway, between Gardenia and Stephenson... and just how large it is.

To get around the problem, drivers can take 8 Mile Rd. to Woodward Ave and reenter northbound I-75 at 12 Mile Rd.

Morosi said it is likely that this closure will last through the weekend while the investigation and repairs are completed.
