PONTIAC (WWJ) -- The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says icy roads and "driving too fast" were factors in a deadly, multi-vehicle crash in Pontiac, Monday morning.
According to investigators, seven vehicles were involved in the wreck at around 6 a.m. along eastbound M-59 near Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
A 34-year-old Pontiac man driving a Chevy Aveo lost control on the icy pavement, hit a cable barrier on the left side of the road, officials said.
At the same time, a 20-year-old Waterford man driving a Chevy Impala hit the same icy patch, and also ran off the left side of the road.
As the Chevrolet Impala continued riding along the cable barrier, it was rear-ended by a Dodge Dakota that also hit the icy patch.
The Aveo then bounced off the cable barrier, and ended up sliding back into the road where he was hit by a Ford F-150 driven by an 18-year-old Oxford man, officials said.
The Aveo driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released, while the sheriff's office works to notify his family.
The sheriff's office said seven cars were involved in total, but no other serious injuries were reported.
The OCSO said, in a news release that, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but that driving too fast for the icy road conditions was a factor.
An investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is ongoing.
