TROY (WWJ) -- The biggest laser-projected IMAX screen is coming to Oakland County.
MJR Theatres announced the new screen is being installed at their Troy location on Maple Road. It will be the second IMAX screen in Metro Detroit for MJR after their Southgate location added one in November 2023. The new screen is being built in their biggest auditorium near the lobby and bar.
The revamped auditorium will seat around 300 people; which includes luxury recliners and VIP seating with a private enclosure. While the IMAX screen in Grand Rapids is capable of showing 70mm film, this new screen will be limited to 4K Laser projection. Officials with MJR say the hope is for the screen to be complete for most of the major Hollywood releases coming out later this summer.
In addition to MJR Southgate; other IMAX screens in Metro Detroit include AMC locations in Livonia, Sterling Heights, and Auburn Hills, as well as the Chrysler IMAX Dome at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit.
Movies coming out this year that will play well on the IMAX screen include The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Wicked: For Good, and Avatar: Fire and Ash.
