LUDINGTON (WWJ) – A man, a woman and their dogs are all dead following a plane crash near Ludington Sunday morning.
A 60-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman from Indiana, along with their two dogs, were killed in the crash, which happened shortly after takeoff from Mason County Airport around 10 a.m.
Michigan State Police officials said they had been visiting family in the Ludington area over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend prior to the crash.
Police officials say the plane appeared to take off eastbound from the airport before it "banked hard" in a northerly direction and crashed, according to a report from the Mason County Press.
The fixed-wing, single engine plane was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
The report says it was snowing and there was less than a mile of visibility, with gusts of up to 16 mph at the time of the crash.
It is not clear exactly what led to the crash, which is under investigation by MSP, which will forward the results to the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA was on-scene Sunday and the NTSB is expected to arrive Monday, according to MSP.
Crews from MSP, the Pere Marquette Township Fire Department, Ludington Fire Department, Hamlin Fire Department, Mason County Sheriff's Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources law enforcement, and Life EMS all responded to the scene.
