ROSEVILLE (WWJ) A Jackson man was sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison for his role in a deadly wrong-way crash on I-696 in Macomb County.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced Stephano Ramon Nabors' sentence of 30 to 50 years on Thursday, October 9. It comes after a jury convicted him of Second Degree Murder and a long list of other charges after a three-day trial in late August.
According to prosecutors; Nabors, 42, was intoxicated on May 5, 2023 and driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-696 in the Roseville area. He collided with a vehicle near Couzens Rd., causing it to roll over. He narrowly missed striking the Michigan State Police (MSP) patrol car head-on when they entered the freeway near Groesbeck to investigate, prosecutors said.
Nabors fled troopers as they followed him eastbound in the westbound lanes. He then struck another vehicle head-on, killing the driver; according to prosecutors. Multiple reports said the victim was a 62-year-old Harper Woods man.
A jury also convicted him of Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Death, Driving While License Suspended Causing Death and Fleeing and Eluding Police. All are 15-year felonies.
"Nothing can make up for the loss suffered by the victim's family and loved ones, but we hope today's outcome provides some measure of accountability and closure," Lucido said. "This conviction...sends a clear message: those who endanger our community by running from police and causing deadly consequences will be held fully responsible."
Lucido is calling on Michigan lawmakers to come together in support of "strong, bipartisan" legislation to address the "growing public safety threat of drivers who refuse to stop for law enforcement."
