DETROIT (WWJ) -- As expected, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig is considering a run for Michigan governor.
Craig released a video this morning on his new campaign website announcing that he's forming an exploratory committee as the first step in a run for the state's top job.
In the video, entitled, “Leading From the Front,” Craig discusses his roots as a native Detroiter, his time as police chief, and the prospect of becoming Michigan's leader.
“We need to bring our state back by leading from the front. There’s not much of that going on today,” he says in the video. “I’m opening an exploratory committee to help me think about a run for governor for the state of Michigan.”
Craig stepped down from the Detroit Police Department at the end of last month after eight years as chief, sparking rumors of a future in politics.
Beginning his career in Detroit in 1977, Craig was laid off when the department downsized, and then spent nearly three decades working for the Los Angeles Police Department.
He later served as chief of police in Cincinnati for two years, and had also previously served the same post in Portland, Maine
Craig made his first political speech earlier this month at an event celebrating the founding of the Republican party.
“I offered to help lead the Republican party into areas that have historically not voted Republican. And to show we are all around friends and there are no enemies when it comes Michigan’s future,” Craig said.
He also teased an “important announcement” while speaking with Tucker Carlson on Fox News last week.
By entering the race, Craig would become the biggest name to face off against Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the 2022 election.
