(WWJ/AP) - Not long before he hanged himself in his Manhattan jail cell, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein wrote a letter while behind bars to another high-profile pedophile, Larry Nassar.

The revelation was one of many that came to light in over 4,000 pages of documents obtained Thursday by the Associated Press in relation to Epstein’s death from the federal Bureau of Prisons under the Freedom of Information Act.

Epstein’s unreported letter to Nassar, a convicted serial child molester and former sports medicine physician who is currently sitting behind bars for sexually abusing young girls, was discovered returned to sender in the jail’s mail room roughly two weeks after Epstein’s death

“It appeared he mailed it out and it was returned back to him,” the investigator who found the letter told a prison official by email. “I am not sure if I should open it or should we hand it over to anyone?”

Its exact contents are currently unknown. The letter itself was not included among the documents turned over to the AP.

Hundreds of girls and women have said Nassar molested them when he was a physician, including while he worked at Michigan State and Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.

He pleaded guilty in 2017 to sexually assaulting nine victims and possessing child pornography.

The documents obtained by the AP also provide a fresh window into Epstein’s behavior during his 36 days in jail and detailed his declining mental health. They include a psychological reconstruction of the events leading to Epstein’s suicide, as well as his health history, internal agency reports, emails, memos and other records.

Epstein’s death put increased scrutiny on the Bureau of Prisons and led the agency to close the Metropolitan Correctional Center in 2021.
