(WWJ) A newly formed coalition says more than 600 Michigan Jewish voters are backing Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate.
Michigan Jews for Democracy says its members come from across the political spectrum and have pledged to vote for El-Sayed in November. The group includes former Congressmen Sander Levin and Andy Levin, along with Attorney General nominee and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit.
El-Sayed is facing Republican Mike Rogers for the seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
“Some of us are enthusiastic supporters of El-Sayed,” the statement says. “Some of us have reservations. There are disagreements with El-Sayed on important issues .… These concerns remain serious for many of us, and we will vote for El-Sayed.”
“We understand that a vote is not a valentine; it’s a strategic chess move. Our goal is to reinstate a check on Trump’s power by winning back control of the US Senate… and to have a strong and respected [Jewish] voice at the table.…”
The coalition includes city council members, teachers, law professors, and members of several Jewish groups in Michigan; including some congregates from Temple Israel.
