ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WWJ) – For a ninth straight year, a “secret Santa” in metro Detroit has made a very generous donation.
The Salvation Army says somebody dropped a rare, 1979 South African gold Krugerrand coin into the red kettle at the post office in St. Clair Shores on Monday night. The coin is estimated to be worth around $1,700.
This marks the ninth straight year someone – a very generous, anonymous donor – dropped a Krugerrand into a red kettle in St. Clair Shores.
The folks at the Salvation Army say it may be a new mystery donor, however, as the post office is a different location than the usual donation spot – a Kroger store in the area of 9 Mile Road and Jefferson Avenue.
The hefty donation brings the Salvation Army closer to its goal of raising $8.3 million this holiday season for the Red Kettle Campaign, which helps support various programs that help feed, house and provide toys and gifts for those in need.

The Salvation Army says the one Krugerrand can go a long way in helping the community:
• $20 will help provide a basic needs kit.
• $25 will help keep a child warm this winter.
• $50 will assist an emergency disaster victim.
• $100 will help provide 1 week of meals for a family of 4.
During last year’s Red Kettle Campaign, the Salvation Army helped provide:
• More than 2.4 million meals
• Nearly 383,000 nights of shelter
• Nearly 205,000 Christmas toys and gifts for children and seniors
• Resolution of 1,800 legal issues through the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic
• $125 will help send a kid to Echo Grove Camp – including transportation, lodging, food and supplies – for a week of life-changing fun!
• $1,000 Will help feed, house and counsel a family for a month.
