DETROIT (WWJ) - A watermain break has completely flooded ramps to a major Detroit freeway on Thursday morning and drivers are being told to seek alternative routes as repairs are made.
The Michigan Department of Transportation said both east and westbound ramps to eastbound I-94 are completely shut down until further notice while crews work to fix and clean up the mess that began just after midnight on Thursday.
"There's been a watermain break -- topside flooded the ramps," MDOT said in a morning update. "Once water department fixes it, MDOT will sweep the ramps and reopen them."
The first exit west of I-96 is Grand Blvd., which is where a number of vehicles are exiting to turn around to go east, WWJ's Mike Campbell said that requires a left, a Michigan left, and a right.
"That flooding appears to be coming from a culvert that was perhaps being worked on as part of the new Grand River overpass of I 94, just east of I-96," Campbell explained.
Campbell said the water can be seen running down through the dirt and onto the ramps, especially onto the ramp from westbound I-96 to eastbound I-94.
"That is completely covered in muck and junk and water and it looks like it could remain closed for a while," Campbell added.
At this time, MDOT said there is no estimated time for when the ramps will reopen.
