MT. CLEMENS (WWJ) – The Michigan Law Enforcement Torch Run, a major supporter of Special Olympics Michigan gets underway this weekend. It is the single largest grassroots fundraiser for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The festivities begin with an event at Louie’s Towne Grille in Mt. Clemens Saturday morning, as well as a handful of other events across the state. The central route run will begin in Copper Harbor – one of the state’s northernmost points – on Monday and finish on Detroit’s Belle Isle on Friday, Sept. 16.

WWJ’s Erin Vee spoke live Thursday night with Andrea Rachko, the senior director of the LETR. Rachko said the event has been happening in Michigan for 38 years, and they’ve raised upwards of $20 million for Special Olympics Michigan.

They’ve almost reached $2 million in 2022 alone.

“It’ll be a milestone to break $2 million, so we’re hoping we can accomplish that and we’re hoping we can send about 2-3,000 athletes to our statewide tournaments,” Rachko said.

The state’s fall games are scheduled to begin on Sept. 23.

Anyone interested in registering as a runner or walker can do so here. More information on LETR is available on the Special Olympics Michigan website.
