BLOOMFIELD HILLS (WWJ) - A fire that raged through the garage of a Bloomfield Hill home may have been caused by a lightning strike as storms blew through the area on Thursday afternoon.

The Bloomfield Hills Fire Department said fire crews were dispatched to a home in the 1600 block of Rathmor Road just after 2:30 p.m. after multiple calls came in about a building fire.

While fire officials are still working to determine the cause of the fire, witnesses said they saw lightning in the immediate area right before the incident.

A line of thunderstorms blew through the area early Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy downpours and frequent lightning. The storms impacted the Howell and Flint area just before 11:15 a.m. and pushed into Detroit, Monroe and Port Huron at around 1:15 p.m.

The Bloomfield Hills Fire Department said they were helped on scene by the Troy Fire Department Troy Mich., Bloomfield Township Fire Department, Berkley Department of Public Safety and Star EMS.
